Bear, with an ending on it

Dovi is a diminutive of Dov, and Dov is simply the Hebrew word for a bear — דוב. The -i ending is the ordinary Hebrew way of making a name familiar, the same move that turns Yosef into Yossi and Moshe into Moshele. So Dovi means bear, with an affectionate suffix attached.

Our own listing says the meaning is "a name of uncertain origin, often associated with a playful or affectionate connotation". That is wrong, and unusually so, because the background note on the same page gets it right: it says the Hebrew root means bear. When a listing contradicts itself, the background note is usually the part that was researched.

Why a bear

Animal names are common in Hebrew and in Yiddish, and they are usually chosen for the quality rather than the creature. Dov is one of the oldest and most familiar: a boy named Dov is being named for strength, and the bear is doing the work the lion does in other traditions. Related names in the same family include Zev, a wolf, and Ari, a lion.

Dovi as a standalone name rather than a nickname is a modern habit. It has become common enough in Israel and in Jewish communities elsewhere that plenty of people are Dovi on their birth certificate, but the shape of the name is still that of a diminutive, and anyone who speaks Hebrew will hear it as one.

Dovi on a dog

DOH-vee. The d at the front is a clean plosive, and the long -ee at the end is the kind of vowel that carries rather than stops dead. Both halves do their job, which is not true of every name.

The name is short and warm and it does not sound like the standard English pet names, which is what most people are looking for. One caution: it is close to Toby, and if there is a Toby in the household or the walking group the two will be confused — by the dogs as much as by you, since they share a vowel and a shape.

There is one more thing worth knowing about the shape of it. A short name finishing on a long -ee is the easiest kind for a dog to learn, and Dovi is exactly that, which means a reliable recall comes almost free. The cost of the same shape is that it is extremely common among pet names, so the name is distinctive on paper and rather less so in a park full of dogs whose names end the same way.

Common questions

What does Dovi mean?

Bear. It is a diminutive of Dov, the Hebrew word for a bear — דוב — with the familiar -i ending. Our listing's "uncertain origin" is incorrect, and its own background note says the right thing.

Is Dovi a boy's name or a girl's name?

It is a masculine name in Hebrew, from Dov. Our listing files it as unisex, which does not match how it is actually used.
