Editorial Policy

Last updated: 1 November 2026

This page describes how the name entries and category pages on Dog-Name.net are researched, written and corrected. It applies to editorial content, not to advertising, which is labelled and served separately.

What we publish

Each name entry aims to answer four questions: what the name means, where it comes from, how it is pronounced, and what variations or related names exist. A short background story is added where there is something verifiable to say — a linguistic history, a cultural association, a documented bearer of the name. Pages are not padded with speculation to reach a word count.

Research and sourcing

Etymology and meaning claims are checked against dictionaries, etymological references and linguistic sources rather than against other name-list sites. Cultural and biographical references are checked against published sources. Where a name is tied to a breed or a kennel-club convention, the relevant organisation's material is used. A claim that depends on a single unreliable source is generally omitted.

Etymology is not always settled. When respectable sources disagree, the entry names the competing explanations and says which one is better supported. We do not present a folk etymology as fact simply because it is widely repeated.

Use of automation

Drafting, structuring and consistency checks may involve language-model tools. They are used as drafting and checking aids, not as the source of factual claims: names, meanings, origins and dates are verified against the references described above before publication. Entries that cannot be verified are held back or reduced to the parts that can be. This disclosure exists so that readers can judge the content accordingly.

Accuracy and corrections

Entries are reviewed on a rolling basis and corrected when a better source appears or a reader points out an error. To report a problem, email [email protected] with the page URL and, if possible, a source. Corrections that change a factual claim are made on the page itself; we do not silently rewrite an entry and leave the old claim elsewhere on the site.

Advertising and editorial independence

The site is funded by display advertising served through third-party networks. Advertisers do not choose, review or approve name entries, and payment does not buy a place in the library or a favourable description. Sponsored articles and paid links are not accepted inside the name pages. If that ever changes, the content will be clearly labelled as advertising.

Images and attributed material

Photographs are served from our own image host and are used only where we have a right to use them. Short quotations from other sources are attributed and linked where possible. If you believe material on the site infringes your rights, contact us with the URL and the basis of the claim and we will review it promptly.
