About Dog-Name.net

Dog-Name.net is an independent reference library of dog names. Every entry is meant to answer a practical question — what a name means, where it comes from, how it is pronounced, and what kind of dog it might suit — rather than simply adding another word to a list.

What you will find here

The library can be browsed by meaning, language or country of origin, gender, colour, temperament, size, length and starting letter. Each name page carries its meaning, a short background story where one is known, pronunciation guidance and common variations. The same name can appear in several categories, because a name can be short, German and suitable for a small dog at the same time.

Category pages exist to narrow a shortlist, not to rank names. A name's position in a category says nothing about how good the name is. If you are choosing a name, the category index is the quickest way in.

How entries are researched

Entries are compiled from dictionaries, etymological references, biographical and cultural sources, and published breed or kennel-club material where a name is tied to a breed. When a meaning is disputed, the page says so instead of choosing one version silently. Where a claim rests on a single weak source, it is left out rather than presented as settled fact.

It is also not a kennel registry: a name being listed here does not register it, and the same name is used by many dogs.
