Umbriel
[ˈʌmbriəl]Meaning
from Latin umbra, "shadow"; created by Alexander Pope for a gloomy gnome
Background Story
Umbriel was created by Alexander Pope for the gloomy gnome in his 1712 poem The Rape of the Lock, formed from the Latin umbra, meaning "shadow". The name was later given to a moon of Uranus, discovered by William Lassell in 1851, whose four then-known moons were named at John Herschel's suggestion in 1852. The same name is used in Danish, Swedish, German, Dutch, French, Polish and Norwegian Bokmål.
