The dog in the puppet show

Before it was anybody's given name, Toby was a dog in a puppet show. In Punch and Judy, the traditional English seaside entertainment, Mr Punch's dog is called Toby — sometimes Dog Toby — and he wears a red and white ruff. In the earliest versions he was not a puppet at all: he was a live performing dog, billed alongside Mr Punch rather than beneath him.

The show has been performed in England since the seventeenth century. That means Toby has been a dog's name in English for something like three hundred and fifty years, which is a considerably longer claim on the name than its use as a short form of Tobias has any hope of matching. If you are looking for the reason this name sounds like a dog, that is it.

From Toviyah, by way of a pet form

The name underneath is Tobias, from the Hebrew Toviyah: tov, "good", and Yah, a short form of the divine name. "God is good" is the usual English rendering, and it is the meaning our own listing gives. Tobias is a book of the Apocrypha and a well-used name in the seventeenth century, particularly among Puritans and in the Netherlands.

Toby then did what a great many English pet forms did — it detached. By the eighteenth century it was being used on its own, with no reference to Tobias, and it has been an independent name ever since. The spellings Tobey and Tobias are both still current, and our listing offers them as variations.

Why it is one of the classic dog names

Toby does almost everything a dog name needs, and it does it without any unusual sounds. TOH-bee. Two syllables, stress on the first, opening on a plosive t that cuts through wind, closing on a long -ee that you can hold for as long as you have breath. There is no cluster in it, no sound a child will struggle with, and no ambiguity about where the stress goes.

The weakness is the same as its strength: it is so well suited that it is extremely common. Toby is a fixture of British dog names in particular, and there is a real chance of meeting another one. If that matters to you, it is worth knowing before rather than after.

One further point in its favour. Toby is short enough to survive being called in a hurry, familiar enough that nobody will ask you to repeat it, and old enough that it carries no fashion that will date. It is not an interesting choice. It is a choice that will not go wrong.
