Micah
[ˈmaɪkə]Meaning
shortened form of the Hebrew name meaning "who is like Yahweh?"
Background Story
Micah is a contracted form of Micaiah, from the Hebrew מִיכָה, itself short for מִיכַיְהוּ, "who is like Yahweh?". It is the name of one of the twelve minor prophets of the Old Testament, who authored the Book of Micah, and also of a separate person in the Book of Judges, the keeper of an idol. The Puritans used it occasionally as an English given name after the Protestant Reformation, but it did not become common until the end of the 20th century. It is used in Biblical Greek, Biblical Hebrew, Biblical Latin, Dutch, German and Portuguese, and is spelled Micha in German and Dutch and Miika in Finnish.
