Daffy is an ordinary English adjective before it is anybody's name. It means silly, eccentric, mildly mad — the same family as daft — and it has been in use since the nineteenth century. A daffy idea is a daft one, said affectionately. That sense is why the cartoon duck got the name, not the other way round.

Daffy Duck
Daffy Duck was created by Tex Avery and Bob Clampett for Leon Schlesinger Productions, and he first appeared in Porky's Duck Hunt, released on 17 April 1937 — the eighty-fourth film in the Looney Tunes series and the first to feature him. He is an anthropomorphic black duck, and he belongs to the wave of screwball characters that arrived in the late 1930s to replace the earlier, gentler cartoon stars.
His defining feature, and the reason the name fits, is that he is not the hero. He is the foil — for Bugs Bunny, for Porky Pig, for Speedy Gonzales — and he is usually the one who loses. That is a specific and slightly unflattering thing to name a dog after, and it is worth being sure you mean it.

Daffy is also a shortening of Daphne, which is Greek and is the word for the laurel. That route gives the name a completely different character: Daphne is classical and serious, and Daffy is not. If you tell people the dog is called Daffy, most will hear the duck. If you explain that it is short for Daphne, you have answered a question nobody asked.
