[ˈpluːtoʊ]

Meaning

latinized form of Greek Plouton, from ploutos, "wealth"; an alternate name of Hades

Background Story

Pluto comes from Latin Plūtō, from Ancient Greek Πλούτων (Ploútōn), a name derived from ploutos, meaning "wealth", and used as an alternate name of Hades, the god of the underworld. The same name was given to the dwarf planet formerly designated the ninth planet, and Venetia Burney is often credited with suggesting it for the celestial body.
