Zam
[zæm]Meaning
Avestan word for "earth", both land and soil and the world
Background Story
Zam is the Avestan term for the Zoroastrian concept of earth, in the sense of both land and soil and of the world. In Zoroastrian tradition the earth is a primordial element, represented by a minor divinity also called Zam, the hypostasis of the earth. The word became Zamin in Modern Persian, and the element zam carries the same meaning in Middle Persian; in the later language the divinity appears as Zamyad, a contraction of Zam Yazad. The Zam of the earth is not related to the Zam of the Shahnameh, the king of dragons.
