Waverly
[ˈweɪvərli]Meaning
from the rare English surname Waverley, from a place in Surrey
Background Story
Waverly is a variant of the English surname Waverley, which comes from a place in Surrey, itself possibly from the Old English elements wfre, meaning "flickering, wavering", and leah, meaning "woodland, clearing". The surname was borne by the title character in Walter Scott's novel Waverley (1814). Streets in New York and San Francisco were named Waverly after the novel, and a character in Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club is named after the San Francisco street. The name grew more popular for girls after the 1993 film adaptation of that novel and again after the television series Wizards of Waverly Place (2007-2012).
