Orlando is the Italian form of Roland, ultimately from the Proto-West Germanic *Hrōþiland. It is used in Albanian, Dutch, English, French, Georgian, German, Germanic, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Medieval French and Old Germanic. The city in Florida has gone by the name since 1857, perhaps in honor of the soldier Orlando Reeves, whom the Seminoles killed there in 1835; it had previously been settled in 1844 as Jernigan.
