Nakoma

The documented use is a film

If you are here because of the name Nakoma, the chances are good that you met it in 1995. Nakoma is a character in Disney's Pocahontas — Pocahontas's closest friend in the film — and that is the only substantial use of the word in English that I could find.

That does not make it a bad name. Plenty of names now in use arrived through fiction, and a name a generation recognises is a name with a shared reference. It does mean that the accurate description of Nakoma is "a character name from a Disney film", not "a traditional Native American name".

What cannot be traced

Our own listing gives the meaning as "one who is wise" and attributes it to Native American languages in general. That is the same shape of claim as the one attached to Takoda, and it fails the same test.

"Native American languages" is not a language. There are hundreds of them, in dozens of unrelated families, and a real etymology names one. The phrase is a sign that nobody traced the word to anything. Nor is the meaning attached to a specific word in a specific language that anyone can point to.

I could find no dictionary entry, no ethnographic source and no linguistic record of nakoma as a word or a personal name in any Indigenous language of North America. The Disney film is a documented use. Nothing before it is.

Using it anyway

None of this is a reason to avoid the name. It is a reason to be accurate about it, particularly in front of people for whom the languages in question are not decoration. If someone asks what it means, "it is a character from Pocahontas" is a true answer and a perfectly good one. "It is Native American for wise" is a claim you cannot support.

As a dog name it works. nuh-KOH-muh. Three syllables with the stress in the middle and an open -a at the end, which is a good vowel to hold. The k gives it a hard point for the ear to catch. It is soft-sounding and unusual, and it will be shortened to Koma or Naki within a fortnight — which is fine, because both are easier to call than the full name.
