Nadia
[ˈnɑːdiə]Meaning
French spelling of the Russian pet form of Nadezhda, "hope"; also an Arabic name meaning "tender".
Background Story
Nadia began as the French spelling of Nadya, the informal Russian pet form of the virtue name Nadezhda, which means "hope" and entered Slavic through Old Church Slavonic as a translation of the Greek word ἐλπίς. In many Slavic languages related names carry the same meaning, while in Bulgarian and Russian Nadia or Nadya is a diminutive of Nadezhda that is often used as a full name in its own right. The name is also an alternate transcription of the Arabic Nadiyya, meaning "tender" and "delicate", and is used in Bosnian and Turkish. It came into use in France in the 19th century and received a boost in popularity from the Romanian gymnast Nadia Comăneci.
