Molly is a medieval diminutive of Mary, formed like other English hypocorisms by substituting l for r; it evolved from the earlier diminutives Malle and Molle. It has also been used as a diminutive of Margaret and Martha since the 1700s, and as an independent name since at least 1720. English surnames including Moll, Mollett and Mollison are derived from it, and it was borrowed into Swedish, where it was first recorded in 1806. James Joyce used the name for Molly Bloom in his novel Ulysses.
