Background Story
Miah is an anglicised form of the Bengali মিঞা, itself borrowed from Classical Persian میان, and a doublet of Miya. The same word appears in English as Mian, a royal title of the Indian subcontinent that was used by monarchs of Indian states and conferred by the Mughal emperor Jahangir on Rajput rulers. In Bengal, Mian occurs in many personal Muslim names without nobiliary or political relevance. Modern usage of Miah is probably a variant of Mia.
