English borrowed it from German Max, a diminutive of Maximilian, in the 19th century, and it is used in Ancient Roman, Belarusian, Croatian, Georgian, Hungarian, Italian, Latvian, Macedonian, Polish, Portuguese, Slovak and Slovene. Bearers include the German intellectual Max Weber and the German physicist Max Planck, and the name is borne by the title character of the Mad Max films, starting in 1979.
