Leonard
[ˈlɛənərd]Meaning
from the Old German elements lewo "lion" and hart "hard, firm, brave"
Background Story
Leonard derives from the Old High German Leonhard, formed from lewo or leo, "lion", and hart, "hard, firm, brave, hardy". It was the name of a 6th-century Frankish saint from Noblac, the patron of prisoners and horses, and the Normans brought it to England, where it was used steadily through the Middle Ages. As a surname it was also used as an anglicisation of the Irish Ó Leannáin, from leannán, "lover".
