It was given to a group of young men who went through initiation together, the group being called a rika, and the men took the group's name as a given name while keeping their original one. The tradition is no longer practised, but the name is passed down in families from the ancestor who received it, and it is now used as a birth name inherited from a relative and as a family name. It was the birth name of the Kenyan president Jomo Kenyatta.
