Dorado
[doˈɾaðo]Meaning
from Italian dorato, 'gilded, golden', ultimately from Latin deauratus
Background Story
Dorado is a constellation in the Southern Sky, named in the late 16th century by the Dutch explorers Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman. Its name refers to the mahi-mahi, which is called dorado ("golden") in Spanish. The word comes from Italian dorato, "gilded, golden", ultimately from Latin deauratus, the past participle of deauro, "to gild". Though the name is Spanish rather than Latin, astronomers use the Latin genitive form Doradus when naming its stars.
