Dabir is a title and surname of Persian origin used in Iran and the Indian subcontinent, derived from the Middle Persian dibīr, meaning secretary or scribe. Dibīr was the title of one of the four classes in Sasanian Iran, and the New Persian form dabīr returned as an administrative title under the Samanids and Ghaznavids. Under the Mughal Empire it was used as an honorific for writers, government secretaries and administrators, and it is occasionally used as a given name as well as a surname.
