a diminutive of the surname Brown, or of the colour brown; also a Scottish folklore being

Background Story

Brownie is a given name or hypocorism, used in reference to the brownie of Scottish folklore, and it came into use in the 1890s after Palmer Cox published poems and drawings about the mythical beings in the children's magazine St. Nicholas. Broonie is a variant. The word is also a diminutive English term for someone with the surname Brown or for the colour brown, and it was used for Girl Scouts aged seven to ten, taken from a story about the mythological brownie.
