Alma
[ˈæl.mə]Meaning
from Latin almus, "nourishing"; also the Spanish word for "the soul"
Background Story
The name was in rare use before the Battle of Alma in 1854, fought near the River Alma in Crimea, after which it became popular; it was probably inspired by the Latin almus, meaning "nourishing". It coincides with the Spanish word for "the soul", and has also been explained as a short form of Germanic compound names beginning with the element Amal-, as in Amelia. In Hebrew it means "young woman". According to the Book of Mormon, Alma was the name of two prophets, a father and a son.
