Alejandro is the Spanish form of Alexander, borrowed from the Ancient Greek Ἀλέξανδρος (Aléxandros), literally "defender of man". The earlier Spanish form was Alexandro, and the change to Alejandro came from replacing the letter "x" with "j" to fit Spanish phonology and orthography. It was the most popular name for boys in Spain from the 1990s until 2006, and again in 2011.
